The Factors That Decide It

Most people call and ask for a vac truck without knowing which size. That is fine. The size is the answer, not the question. These are the five factors we use to work out which truck suits the job.

Site access Gate width, basement ramps, narrow courtyards, laydown space near the dig zone, and any overhead clearance restrictions all affect which truck can physically reach the work. A truck that cannot get close means longer hose runs and slower excavation.
Spoil volume Tank capacity determines how many tip runs a truck makes during the job. A 500L tank fills quickly on a multi-hole or deep job. A 6000L or 8000L tank suits high-volume civil work where frequent tip runs would add cost and delay.
Dig depth and soil Depth and soil type together affect how much spoil comes out and how long each hole takes. Sandy or loose soil is faster. Clay and compacted fill take longer. High water tables raise spoil weight. Deeper holes in heavy soil fill smaller tanks quickly.
Job type Single potholing to locate a service is very different to bulk civil excavation for a new conduit run or drain work on a blocked sewer lateral. The scope of work, number of holes, and whether the job runs over one or several days all factor into the right truck choice.
Wet vs dry hire All vac truck hire through Pro Expose is wet hire. The truck, an experienced operator, the water supply for the hydro excavation process, and spoil removal to an approved facility are all included. You do not supply water or arrange tip runs separately.

Capacity Classes at a Glance

Each capacity class suits a different combination of access and volume. Here is an honest summary of where each class fits best.

500L Micro Vac Truck Ultra-tight access. Suited to potholing, single-service location, and confined site work where a standard truck cannot reach the dig zone. Narrow side gates, internal courtyards, basement entries and heritage access routes. The smallest footprint available. Fills quickly on high-volume or deep jobs, so it is best matched to targeted, lower-volume work.
4500L Mid-Size Vac Truck General residential and light commercial. The 4500L is a common choice for multi-hole potholing, residential drain work, and light civil excavation on sites with standard driveway or road access. More tank capacity means fewer tip runs compared to a micro, and the footprint still fits most residential and suburban commercial sites.
6000L Vac Truck Civil and commercial with higher spoil volumes. The 6000L vac truck is suited to larger civil excavation, commercial service work, and bulk spoil jobs where running a smaller tank would require excessive tip runs. Needs reasonable access. Not suited to tight residential sites or narrow access routes where a smaller truck can reach the work directly.
8000L Vac Truck Large civil and bulk spoil. The 8000L suits high-volume civil excavation where minimising tip runs is a priority and access is not a constraint. It carries the largest spoil load but also has the biggest footprint. Best matched to open-access civil sites, major utility corridors, and commercial projects with significant excavation scope.

A Quick Checklist When You Call

The more of these you can give us, the faster we can match the right truck and quote the job. You do not need every answer. An approximate description is enough to get started.

  1. Access width to the dig zone (gate width, driveway width, any height or surface restrictions)
  2. Dig depth (approximate, even a rough range helps)
  3. Spoil volume estimate (number of holes, size of each, or square metres if known)
  4. Soil type if known (clay, sand, fill, rock, or unknown)
  5. Job type (potholing, service locating, drain work, civil excavation, other)
  6. Timing (target start date, how many days on site, any hard deadlines)

Vac Truck Selection FAQ

How do I know what size vac truck I need?

Tell us the access width to the dig zone, the estimated spoil volume, how deep the work is going, and whether it is potholing, drain work or broader civil excavation. Those four factors together determine the right size. A 500L micro suits tight access single-hole work; a 4500L covers most general residential and light commercial jobs; a 6000L or larger suits civil and high-volume commercial work with good access. If you describe the job we will match the truck.

Does a bigger vac truck always dig faster?

Not necessarily. A larger truck carries more spoil before needing a tip run, which helps on high-volume jobs. But if access to the site is tight, a bigger truck may have to set up further away and run longer hose back to the dig face, which can slow things down and reduce suction efficiency. The right truck is the one that can get closest to the work with enough tank capacity for the job.

What if my site has tight access?

Tight access is the most common reason to use a smaller-capacity truck. The 500L micro vac truck is suited to narrow side gates, basement entries, internal courtyards and heritage sites where a standard vac truck cannot reach the dig zone. Call 0438 498 274 with the gate or access width and we will tell you whether the truck can get in or whether a longer hose run from the street is the better option.

Is vac truck hire wet hire or dry hire?

All vac truck hire through Pro Expose is wet hire. That means the truck comes with an experienced operator, the water supply for the hydro excavation process, and spoil removal to an approved facility. You do not need to supply water, hire a separate operator, or organise tip runs. The operator runs the dig from setup to pack-down.
